In this article, we explore how architecture must silently integrate into the Alentejo coastal landscape, analyzing a practical case study conducted by MJARC at Herdade da Comporta. Through rigorous environmental surveying and the application of passive and biophilic design principles, we demonstrate how territorial diagnosis serves as the fundamental tool for construction that preserves ecosystems and enhances the unique identity of the place.

Building without breaking the landscape

From Comporta to Carvalhal, through Melides and Grândola, there is a territory where architecture is called to relate carefully with the landscape, the ecosystems, and the memory of the place. Between pine forests, rice fields, and the Atlantic, the Alentejo coast preserves a rare condition: the feeling of continuity between nature and living. It is precisely this fragility that demands a more conscious, silent architectural approach, deeply integrated into the territory. In Comporta, building implies a prior understanding of what already exists. Light, wind, topography, ecological corridors, water systems, native species, and the natural rhythms of the landscape become project materials. More than a formal gesture, architecture becomes an exercise in interpreting the place.

MJARC Project in development

Architecture as a reading of the territory

At MJARC, we believe that architecture must begin long before the drawing. Each project starts with a process of observation, survey, and territorial analysis, seeking to understand the environmental, ecological, and cultural characteristics of each context. More than occupying a plot of land, we are interested in understanding how construction can coexist with what already exists, minimizing impact and reinforcing the continuity between architecture and landscape. Recently, MJARC analyzed the feasibility of a 20-hectare plot within the Herdade da Comporta, covered by particularly demanding ecological and regulatory constraints. The study revealed determining factors for any sustainable intervention in this territory:

Integration into Natura 2000 protected areas;

Preservation of habitats and ecological corridors;

Soil waterproofing limitations;

Absence of conventional public infrastructure;

Need for autonomous water, sanitation, and energy solutions;

Value placed on low construction density. These constraints reveal something essential about architecture in Comporta: the territory does not allow for interventions that are indifferent to the landscape. Building in this context requires a careful relationship with ecosystems, existing vegetation, and the natural identity of the place.

Environmental surveying as a design tool

Sustainability does not start with the choice of materials. It starts with the ability to recognize and understand the territory. In environmentally sensitive contexts, the first project sketches emerge only after a deep technical diagnosis, developed in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams specializing in ecology, biodiversity, and landscape. In a survey recently carried out for MJARC, 242 holm oaks and 1 cork oak were georeferenced—species protected by specific legislation. The study identified stands, evaluated small ecological nuclei, and analyzed the relationship between the project’s footprint and existing natural systems. The analysis allowed for the redefinition of the architectural layout to preserve existing stands and significantly reduce the impact on protected trees. This process demonstrates an approach to architecture that stems from listening to the territory rather than imposing a form upon it. Trees, voids, topography, water, and landscape cease to be obstacles to the project and become an integral part of its conceptual construction.

Passive Architecture and Biophilia

In Comporta, the relationship between architecture and nature takes on a particularly evident dimension. Natural light, cross-ventilation, shading systems, continuity between interior and exterior, and the use of natural materials become essential elements of the spatial experience.

Passive architecture allows for the reduction of energy consumption through solar orientation, natural ventilation, and the climatic integration of the building into the surrounding landscape.

At the same time, biophilic architecture reinforces the connection between living and nature, creating spaces that are quieter, more sensory, and emotionally connected to the territory. More than technical efficiency, it is about building a more balanced relationship between body, space, and landscape.

Douro Wood House: Building from the landscape

MJARC’s approach to the territory spans different geographies and project scales. In the Douro Wood House, developed in the Douro landscape, the aim was to establish a silent relationship between architecture, topography, and matter. The project is born from the natural slope of the land, the presence of wood, light, and visual continuity with the Douro Valley. Rather than an autonomous architectural object, the house seeks to integrate into the landscape and become part of it. The national and international awards granted to the project reflect precisely this way of thinking about contemporary Portuguese architecture: a practice that seeks to reduce impact, respect natural systems, and build lasting relationships between space, territory, and living. This vision remains present in how we design projects in Comporta, Melides, Grândola, and other environmentally sensitive territories.

Building with discretion

In a territory like Comporta, architecture cannot be understood as a gesture isolated from the landscape. Building implies recognizing what already exists: the ecosystems, the trees, the voids, the topography, the water, the natural cycles, and the silent memory of the place. Perhaps the most sustainable architecture is precisely that which knows how to occupy the territory with discretion, allowing the landscape to remain the protagonist. At MJARC, we believe that every project must begin with that listening.

FAQ

What characterizes sustainable architecture in Comporta?

Sustainable architecture in Comporta is characterized by careful integration with the landscape, the use of passive architecture principles, the preservation of ecosystems, and the promotion of natural materials and low-impact solutions.

Why is it important to study the territory before designing?

Territorial and environmental surveys allow for an understanding of ecological constraints, protected species, natural systems, and climatic characteristics, ensuring more integrated and sustainable projects.

What is biophilic architecture?

Biophilic architecture seeks to strengthen the connection between people and nature through natural light, vegetation, ventilation, natural materials, and a visual relationship with the landscape.

How does passive architecture contribute to sustainability?

Passive architecture reduces energy needs through solar orientation, natural ventilation, shading, and the climatic integration of the building into the territory.

What is the importance of ecological preservation in territories like Comporta and Melides?

Ecological preservation is essential to maintain the balance of the landscape, protect natural habitats, and ensure that the relationship between architecture and territory remains sustainable over time.

Ready to design your sanctuary in Comporta?

At MJARC, we turn territorial insights into exceptional architecture.
