Architects Maria Jo\u00e3o Andrade and Ricardo Cordeiro, founding partners of MJARC Arquitetos, recently participated in the Portuguese Architecture Webinar promoted by Espa\u00e7o de Arquitetura, an initiative that brings together professionals, students, and enthusiasts to debate relevant themes in contemporary architecture.<\/p>\n

Throughout the session, the studio’s founders shared the journey of MJARC Arquitetos, the principles guiding their practice, and how each project results from a careful reading of the natural, cultural, and human context in which it is embedded.<\/p>\n

Rather than just presenting completed works, the session sought to reveal the thinking behind each intervention, addressing the creative process, the challenges encountered, and the strategies developed to respond to the specificities of each place.<\/p>\n

Context-oriented architecture<\/h2>\n

Since its founding, MJARC Arquitetos has developed a practice based on the conviction that architecture must be born from a deep understanding of the territory, the existing memory, and the needs of those who will inhabit the spaces.<\/p>\n

This approach translates into an architecture that seeks to establish harmonious relationships between people, the landscape, and the built environment, while simultaneously valuing sustainability, rehabilitation, and the conscious use of resources.<\/p>\n

During the webinar, several themes characterizing the studio’s identity were discussed, namely the integration of nature into architecture, the valorization of pre-existing structures, design oriented by human experience, and the search for specific solutions for each context.<\/p>\n

Four projects, four distinct challenges<\/h2>\n

The presentation included a selection of four projects representative of the diversity of scales, programs, and challenges addressed by MJARC.<\/p>\n

Among the projects presented were architectural rehabilitation interventions, housing integrated into the landscape, and designs that demonstrate different ways of responding to territorial constraints without compromising spatial quality or the identity of the places.<\/p>\n

Each case illustrated how the studio views the design process: not as the application of a predefined formal language, but as a response built from listening, analyzing, and interpreting the concrete circumstances of each intervention.<\/p>\n

Architecture as a process of transformation<\/h2>\n

One of the central themes of the conversation was the role of architecture as an agent of positive transformation for the territory.<\/p>\n

Through the rehabilitation of existing buildings, the enhancement of the landscape, and the adoption of passive sustainability strategies, MJARC seeks to develop projects that contribute to a more balanced relationship between human activity and the ecosystems where it takes place.<\/p>\n

This vision has been recognized through various international distinctions and publications, yet it continues to find its main motivation in the ability to create spaces that respond authentically to the people and places for which they are conceived.<\/p>\n
