On 25 September, Portugal marks National Sustainability Day<\/strong>. Established in 2023, the date coincides with the adoption of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals by the United Nations in 2015.<\/p>\n

For MJARC, it is an opportunity to consider a question that comes before any new intervention: what deserves to remain?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Preserving the Landscape, Structure and Memory<\/h2>\n

At Douro Wood House<\/a>, the answer began with the land. The house was raised to avoid significant changes to the topography, while openings in the roof allowed the existing trees to be preserved. The architecture found its place among what was already there.<\/p>\n

At Riverside Condominium<\/a>, in Santa Comba D\u00e3o, preservation meant giving new life to an unfinished building. The intervention retained more than 90% of the original structure, transforming it into homes that open towards the landscape of the D\u00e3o River.<\/p>\n

At Cicioso Boutique Hotel<\/a>, in the historic centre of \u00c9vora, the transformation began with the building\u2019s memory. Its vaulted ceilings and wooden floors were preserved and became part of a new hospitality experience.<\/p>\n

Preserving What Exists, Designing for the Future<\/h2>\n

Preservation takes on other forms when a building finds a new purpose. In hospitality, the existing structure and its history can become part of the guest experience. We explore this relationship between continuity and transformation in our article on hospitality and adaptive reuse<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Other choices are less visible, yet felt throughout a building\u2019s life: its orientation, shading, ventilation and response to the local climate. In our article on bioclimatic architecture in Portugal<\/a>, we look more closely at how these decisions can contribute to comfort across the seasons.<\/p>\n

These are different contexts, united by the same intention: to understand what exists before adding something new. Thoughtful architecture can also be recognised in what it chooses to preserve.<\/strong><\/p>\n
