Throughout its lifetime, families, ways of working, technologies, the climate and society’s needs will all change.

Designing a building therefore means responding to present needs while also anticipating the conditions in which it may be inhabited over the coming decades.

This difference between the timeframe of design and the lifespan of architecture places a particular responsibility on architects: to make lasting decisions while creating room for a future we do not yet fully know.

On World Architecture Day 2026, this reflection becomes particularly relevant:

How can we design buildings and spaces that will continue to make sense twenty, fifty or more years from now?

Thinking About Architecture Beyond the Building

Designing for the future requires looking beyond the physical boundaries of each building.

Norman Foster’s vision and the work developed by the Norman Foster Institute reinforce the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to cities, bringing together architecture, research, planning and urban management.

This perspective necessarily broadens the scale of reflection.

The quality of a home does not depend solely on what happens within its walls. It also depends on the street it is part of, the proximity of services, transport, public spaces, the landscape and opportunities for social interaction.

Every building participates in a territory and in a collective life that will also evolve over time.

Thinking about architecture therefore means understanding that what we build today will become part of the cities and landscapes of tomorrow.

Preserving, Transforming and Extending the Life of Buildings

The work of Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal demonstrates how the transformation of existing buildings can significantly improve living conditions, enlarge spaces and extend the lifespan of buildings, while preserving resources and respecting their inhabitants.

This approach introduces a fundamental question before any new intervention:

What value already exists in this place, and how can we give it continuity?

At a time when sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of construction are increasingly important, building rehabilitation, structural reuse and adaptation to new uses take on a particularly significant role.

<div style="flex: 1; A residential building may need to support new ways of living.

A building may, several decades from now, take on a completely different use from the one for which it was originally designed.

Designing for longevity therefore means creating adaptable architecture.

Spaces that can be reorganised. Durable and repairable materials. Technical systems that are accessible and can be updated. Structures whose lifespan can extend beyond their initial function.

The capacity for transformation should not only be considered once a building stops responding to existing needs.

It can be designed from the very beginning.

Sustainable Architecture in the Face of Climate Change

Climate change makes this ability to anticipate even more important.

The buildings designed today will face different environmental conditions over the coming decades.

Solar protection, natural ventilation, energy efficiency, water management and the relationship with vegetation should therefore be understood as an integral part of architectural strategy.

Rather than adding technological solutions afterwards, it is important to consider from the outset how architecture itself can respond passively to climatic conditions.

Orientation, shade, thermal mass, ventilation and the relationship with the ground can reduce energy demand and increase comfort throughout the life of a building.

It is also in this sense that architecture and sustainability can no longer be treated as separate subjects.

Designing for the future inevitably means considering the resources we use today.

Technology as a Tool, Not as the Answer

The technological revolution is also profoundly changing the way we design.

BIM modelling, environmental simulation, data analysis and artificial intelligence expand our ability to study alternatives, anticipate performance and coordinate decisions.

These tools allow us to process increasingly large amounts of information and to do so increasingly quickly.

But speed does not replace judgement.

It is the architect’s role to interpret that information, integrate the contributions of different disciplines and understand the consequences of each decision for people’s lives and for the territory.

Light. Privacy. Acoustic comfort. Accessibility. The relationship with the landscape. The possibility of encounter.

These are dimensions that require attention and sensitivity, and they continue to determine how we experience architecture.

Paradoxically, the faster our tools become, the more important the time dedicated to thinking may become.

World Architecture Day 2026: Housing as a Responsibility

The theme chosen by the International Union of Architects for World Architecture Day 2026 — “Housing is a Human Right. Build It.” — places the right to housing at the centre of reflection on the profession.

The date coincides with the United Nations World Habitat Day, which in 2026 focuses on the theme “Adequate Housing for All”.

This discussion reminds us that thinking about the longevity of buildings is not only an environmental or construction-related issue.

It is also a social issue.

It means considering who may inhabit a building, how much it will cost to use and maintain, and to what extent it can adapt to different needs over time.

It means thinking not only about creating more housing, but about building and transforming better what will form part of our cities for many decades.

The reuse of the existing building stock, adaptation to new needs and the search for sustainable, context-sensitive solutions therefore become an essential part of contemporary architectural practice.

Designing Today to Continue Serving Tomorrow

At MJARC, we seek to begin with the place, the people and the specific conditions of each project in order to build that response.

We believe that extending the life of buildings, preserving structures whenever possible and facilitating their adaptation can reduce the need for demolition and replacement, while also helping to preserve resources and identity.

But thinking about the future does not mean trying to predict it in every detail.

It means creating room for architecture to respond to change.

The architect’s role is to think about the present with the awareness that many of today’s decisions will remain long after construction is complete.

Taking the time to think today means creating the conditions for architecture to continue serving tomorrow.

MJARC Architects

In a world undergoing constant transformation, often at a pace that exceeds our ability to fully understand and integrate change, the time dedicated to reflection is becoming increasingly valuable.
