Riverside Condominium nominated by ArchDaily for Building of the Year 2025

The Riverside Condominium, located in Santa Comba Dão, was recently nominated by ArchDaily for Building of the Year 2025 in the residential category.

This project, developed by MJARC Arquitetos, stands out for its rehabilitation of an unfinished structure that has marked the local landscape for more than two decades. The intervention aimed to preserve and revitalise the existing structure, avoiding demolition and promoting sustainability. More than 90 per cent of the original structure, including beams, columns and slabs, was retained, resulting in significant embodied carbon savings. The residential building has four floors above ground, housing 28 two and three bedroom flats, all with panoramic views over the River Dão. The façade is clad in bamboo wood from internationally certified forests, reinforcing the commitment to sustainable practices. In addition, the zinc roof creates shaded areas on the terraces, emphasising the horizontality of the building.

This project exemplifies how conscious rehabilitation can transform obsolete structures into contemporary spaces harmoniously integrated into the natural landscape.
